We have an immediate opening for a Staff Consultant in a remote position in San Diego, CA. The selected candidate has the option to work in our San Diego, CA office, and must reside within commuting distance of the San Diego International Airport (SAN).  

This exciting position will support our growing transportation planning and environmental practice.  Since our founding in 1981, HMMH has addressed environmental issues at airports. HMMH has delivered expert assistance to more than 200 airports worldwide. The focus of our Aviation Environmental & Sustainability Group is to analyze, evaluate, and find solutions for airport environmental issues. We prepare noise and air quality studies, develop sustainability plans, evaluate and develop mitigation plans for environmental impacts, contribute to environmental documentation, engage the public, and ensure regulatory compliance. 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work on acoustical testing and sound insulation projects: 
    • Conduct field acoustical measurements
    • Data analysis 
    • Technical reporting
    • Project management
    • Organization of measurement equipment and lab management
  • Acoustical modeling, analysis and quality control tasks for airport sound insulation programs. 
  • Outdoor fieldwork in the San Diego, CA area - at times this will include up to 2 weeks every other month and possibly up to 2 weeks every month conducting outdoor fieldwork. 
  • While most of the fieldwork will be in the San Diego area, there is a possibility for future sound insulation measurements fieldwork at airports throughout the country.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of relevant experience.
  • BS, BA, or MS in a technical field (preferably acoustics, but also aerospace/aviation, physics, math, engineering, environmental sciences, or other technical fields)
  • Strong quantitative, analytical skills and communication skills
  • Experience with sound measuring equipment, or other professional measurement equipment
  • Demonstrated project management skills and experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and collaborative communication skills
  • Ability to present results to clients and the public
  • Comfortability interacting with strangers and the public while working in the field
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with acoustic and aviation terminology
  • Experience working in a consulting environment
  • Experience utilizing GIS for data acquisition, analysis, and reporting functions
  • Data management and programming experience (specifically SQL and Python)

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. regularly while conducting field measurements
  • This position requires frequent local and eventually national travel.   
  • This position requires working in the field outside with multiple weather elements.
