Managing Consultant – AEDT Aviation Noise and Air Quality Modeling

Remote - BURLINGTON, MA

Harris Miller Miller & Hanson Inc. (HMMH) is a trusted leader in studying, assessing, and mitigating the impacts of new and existing transportation projects on communities. We provide consulting services to government and private sector clients across various sectors, including aviation, highway, rail, transit, industrial, construction, military, recreational, and entertainment projects.

We have an immediate opening for a Managing Consultant (AEDT Aviation Noise and Air Quality Modeling), available as a remote position or hybrid from one of our seven offices nationwide.

This exciting role will strengthen our growing transportation planning and environmental practice.  Since our founding in 1981, HMMH has been a pioneer in addressing environmental challenges at airports, providing expert assistance to over 200 airports worldwide. Our Aviation Environmental & Sustainability Group specializes in analyzing, evaluating, and resolving airport environmental issues. We prepare noise and air quality studies, develop sustainability plans, design mitigation strategies, contribute to environmental documentation, engage with the public, and ensure regulatory compliance. Shape

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze aircraft flight track databases, aviation data, and environmental data sources to develop precise inputs for modeling environmental impacts (noise, air quality, and sustainability) around airports and affected communities, with a primary emphasis on using the FAA’s Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT).
  • Lead the development of noise and air quality studies using AEDT, including creating model inputs, running simulations, exporting results, and interpreting outputs for small to midsize projects such as Noise Exposure Map (NEM) updates, Noise Compatibility Program (NCP) revisions, and NEPA-related noise or air quality analyses.
  • Serve as the technical lead for tasks on complex projects, ensuring high-quality execution and innovative problem-solving in environmental modeling.
  • Manage multiple projects, including mid-to-large-size efforts involving subconsultants, such as Part 150 studies, sound insulation programs, airport sustainability plans, or master plan updates.
  • Prepare technical reports, deliverables, and presentations, effectively communicating derived data and environmental findings to both technical and non-technical audiences, including clients and the public.
  • Meet regularly with clients to discuss project progress, related technical needs, and business development opportunities, while actively seeking new business and exceeding financial performance goals.
  • Conduct research on aviation environmental and sustainability topics, designing and implementing research programs.
  • Supervise subconsultants and delegate tasks to staff, fostering technical aptitude in AEDT and related tools while promoting professional growth and attention to detail.
  • Lead or significantly contribute to corporate initiatives, such as developing new AEDT training courses and materials or conducting internal training sessions.
  • Actively participate in industry associations or external technical activities to enhance expertise and visibility in AEDT and aviation environmental analysis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5–10 years of relevant experience, with demonstrated expertise in the FAA’s Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT), preferably in a consulting environment.
  • BS or MS in a technical field (e.g., aerospace/aviation, engineering, environmental sciences, physics, math, or related disciplines).
  • Advanced proficiency in AEDT, with the ability to independently develop model inputs, run analyses, and interpret results for noise, air quality, and sustainability studies.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, coupled with exceptional writing and communication abilities to produce high-quality deliverables and proposals.
  • Proven project management experience, including successful oversight of midsize projects from start to finish, with a solid understanding of financial and contractual aspects.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical tasks, supervise subconsultants, and delegate effectively while maintaining consistent attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, with a track record of building client relationships and meeting business development goals.
  • Ability to present complex AEDT-derived results to clients, stakeholders, and the public in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Frequent involvement in industry associations or external technical activities is a plus.
